Informational Tables

This informational table will introduce the Baltimore Social-Environmental Collaborative (BSEC), a JHU-led initiative to generate the science needed for equitable climate action and energy security in the city of Baltimore. BSEC faculty and students will engage with symposium attendees with demonstration of environmental measurement techniques, information sheets on project design and results, and examples of collaboration with community and city leaders to implement equitable climate solutions.

The Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future (CLF) works toward a healthy, equitable, resilient food system from within the Department of Environmental Health and Engineering in the Bloomberg School of Public Health. Over the years, CLF has helped students and stakeholders in and out of the classroom understand the important role that food systems play in planetary health and apply that understanding in making meaningful change.

Our table will highlight opportunities to engage with CLF’s work on topics such industrial food animal production, dietary behavior change, climate change, and food-related policy through education, research and collaboration. We will also share resources for promoting and participating in Meatless Monday, a simple, one day a week action toward a sustainable, healthy food system. We are looking forward to meeting students, staff and faculty to share our core commitment to food systems sustainability.

What do you know about Energy? 31 Questions. Anyone can approach the table to answer the questions, in a short amount of time, without using any electronic aids. Mr. Chaitkin will then review the answers and explain what the correct answers are. Two students can do this activity at a time, as long as they don’t discuss their prospective answers with each other.

Table Rep: Stuart Chaitkin is a retired Energy Policy Analyst. He worked for the California Public Utilities Commission for 10 years. He also worked on energy issues for Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory for 9 years. He created a course called “Energy, Environment, and Public Health” that he offered 16 times from 2008 to 2025 at the Bloomberg School of Public Health. Chaitkin is a Senior Associate with the Department of Environmental Health and Engineering at the Bloomberg School of Public Health.

The Center of Alternatives to Animal Testing‘s work focuses on developing cutting-edge biotechnologies, educational initiatives, and multi-stakeholder events that drive the shift away from animal models. We promote and develop scientific practice and tools that increase specificity, human relevance, and the humane treatment of animals in clinical and research settings.

Come learn more about the Institute for Planetary Health. We are a cross-university institute with affiliates from nearly every division and department. JHIPH staff will be available to talk about our programs and our research, and how you can be involved!

The Life Design Lab at Johns Hopkins University provides students with the guidance, resources, and opportunities to navigate their career journeys with confidence. Stop by our table to learn about our unique approach to career exploration and meet Life Design Educators who support students interested in sustainability careers.

The JHU Office of Climate & Sustainability, located in the department of Johns Hopkins Facilities and Real Estate, has been advancing a culture of sustainability across all schools and divisions since 2006.
