In alignment with the Johns Hopkins Climate Action and Sustainability Plan (CASP) goals, the Office of Climate & Sustainability (OCS) has developed a Student Organization Sustainability Grant that will promote a culture of responsible consumption and environmentalism among the student body. This grant is designed to encourage students to think critically about environmental issues outside of the classroom. This type of academic exploration will work in tandem with classroom teaching to provide a unique lens on climate issues.
The Student Organization Sustainability Grant will support events that are designed sustainably, have an environmental focus, or otherwise engage with the goals in the JHU Climate & Sustainability plan. Multiple groups can be awarded grant funds, with a maximum annual amount distributed over all groups of $1,000. There is no limit to how much money a club can ask for, but OCS reserves the right to fund only a partial amount of the request.
Applications will open in September 2025; the link to apply will be posted here when available.
Funding will be available to the first 20 eligible applicants, so early application is encouraged. The application period will close once 20 applications are received or by October 31st, whichever comes first. Applications will be reviewed in November and recipients will be notified by December 1st.
- Since the field of sustainability is expansive, there are a plethora of topics that can be funded. Examples of events could be speaker panels, career exploration symposiums, community events, and more.
- Only undergraduate student organizations are eligible for funding.
- The event must be designed and run by JHU students.
- The event itself can take place at any JHU campus location or in Baltimore City at large.
- All funded events must be open to all JHU students.
- A representative from the OCS will be invited to attend the event.
- OCS information should be on all promotional materials for the event.
- The event must be completed by the end of the 2025-2026 academic school year.
- Student groups may not use this funding for materials of supplies for an OCS–hosted event (i.e. Earth Fest or Sustainability Symposium), as the point of this grant is to aid in club-run events.
- The money cannot be used for travel or registration costs associated with a competition, conference, or other external events.
- If the money is being used for catering services, the caterer must be on the JHU list of Preferred Green Caterers.
After the conclusion of the event, grantees will be required to submit a reflection on the event planning process, the impact the funds had on the success of their event, and their perceptions of student body response to the event.
