Bio-Techne signed a letter of commitment with the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), the leading third-party standard to set enterprise-wide reduction targets aligned with the latest climate science. We will be setting Scope 1, 2, and 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction targets for validation through SBTi in 2026. This will allow us to reduce our environmental footprint and work toward decarbonization.

Bio-Techne currently has four labs certified to My Green Lab status – two in San Jose, CA and two in Bristol, UK. Bio-Techne received a 2024 Bronze medal from EcoVadis, a reputable sustainability assessment that is often referenced by our customers. The 2024 score puts us in the top 25% of all companies assessed by EcoVadis in that same year.

Bio-Techne converted our blue tub from plastic to fully paperboard with moisture resistant coating, which is estimated to reduce annual plastic use by nearly 70,000 lbs.

We encourage our customers to join us in our efforts to divert packaging waste from landfills and take advantage of our Corning Recycling (take back) program. Additionally, Corning has committed to reduce our Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 30% by 2028, in alignment with a 1.5 degree C future scenario. And we pledge to reduce our Scope 3 GHG emissions by 17.5% by 2028, which is well below a 2 degree C future scenario. These are the highlights of our sustainability initiatives.

Eppendorf’s sustainability offering is highlighted by our Biobased Tubes, Pipette Tips and Plates. These consumables are manufactured with bio-based polymer made from 100 % renewable resources (e.g. waste and residues from vegetable oil refining or waste cooking oil).

• Consumables and Glassware: Many of our consumables and glassware products are made from recycled materials and non-petroleum resin. For example: Eco-Friendly Pipette Tips (Catalog No. 13-689-5E)
• Reagents/Kits and Biologics: Packaged in locally recyclable materials (#1 or #2 plastics). For instance: Thermo Scientific™ Pierce™ BCA Protein Assay Kit (Catalog No. 23225)
• Services: Our services, such as DNA sequencing and FACS, are conducted using renewable energy. Additionally, we offer a take-back recycling program for hard-to-recycle products. Example: DNA Sequencing Services (Catalog No. SEQ-12345)
  
• Renewable Energy: Our manufacturing facilities use renewable energy, significantly reducing our carbon footprint.
• Decarbonization Plan: We have an extensive decarbonization plan with near-term goals aligned with the UN Race to Zero standards.

As part of our broader sustainability strategy, we decided to establish science-based targets for reducing our greenhouse gas emissions to address climate change and contribute to a low-carbon future. By aligning our environmental objectives with the targets set out in the Paris Agreement, we are joining the global call for climate action, while ensuring that our goals are scientifically grounded and achievable. In line with recommendations set out by the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi), the Miltenyi group has set the following targets:

• Direct and indirect emissions from operations (Scope 1+2): 42% absolute reduction of emissions from 2024 (base year) to 2030. We plan to achieve this target by energy efficiency measures, as well as by switch to an on-site self-generation of renewable energy.
• Value chain emissions (Scope 3): 52% reduction of emissions intensity (per unit of revenue) from 2024 (base year) to 2030. We aim to achieve this target by various activities along our value chain, such as supplier engagement, optimization of transportation and distribution, business travel optimization, eco-packaging, as well as by carbon-neutral growth.

As part of its environmental policy and commitment to sustainability, Miltenyi Biotec is actively investing in photovoltaic projects to reduce its environmental footprint and increase renewable energy consumption across its operations. To date, the company has acquired 6,500 PV modules, with approximately 1,500 already installed. The remaining modules, currently stored in Cologne and Rostock, will be gradually implemented. A key element of this initiative is the in-house execution by Miltenyi FM employees, ensuring high-quality installations and efficiency energy production. Through these measures, the company’s renewable energy capacity will be quadrupled, significantly increasing sustainable energy production and reinforcing its commitment to an environmentally responsible future. Miltenyi Biotec’s substantial increase in PV energy consumption from 2023 to 2024 underscores its dedication to sustainability and clean energy advancements, making this initiative a strong example of its environmental policy in action.

Offsetting our carbon footprint is a crucial component of our sustainability approach. We are dedicated to compensating for unavoidable emissions by supporting projects that contribute to global reforestation and carbon sequestration. As part of this commitment, we have partnered with Treedom, a platform that enables companies and individuals to plant trees worldwide. Through Treedom, trees are planted and cared for by local farmers, promoting environmental restoration, biodiversity, and community development. This initiative not only captures CO₂ but also provides long-term socio-economic benefits by supporting sustainable agroforestry practices.

Another key initiative is our Eco Packaging program. This reflects our dedication to reducing waste and carbon emissions by: 1) Replacing conventional Styrofoam with a fully recyclable paper-based solution. 2) Using FSC-certified materials. 3) Implementing space-saving designs that significantly reduce transport volume. 4) Ensuring temperature-controlled shipping with validated thermal performance

We offer ACT-labeled products, including Agilent Technologies, Cytiva, and MilliporeSigma. We offer ENERGY STAR certified lab-grade refrigerators and freezers. We have partnered with Teracycle, Polycarbin, and Waste Management, to provide a variety of recycling options and programs.

Our dedicated Sustainability Program Lead is implementing and driving the following initiatives in collaboration with members of our Neta team from Business Development, Compliance, Operations, and Fulfillment.

Through our Sustainable Product Program and in partnership with our supplier partners, we obtain information on their sustainability practices and innovations, including minimal packaging, recycling or take-back programs, and equipment trade-in programs. Our program also focuses on procuring green instruments and consumables and managing lists of SKUs labeled “green” from our suppliers that we flag in our system.

We can also support bulk packaging initiatives. When consolidating orders, we ship in-stock items from our warehouse locations in bulk packaging, including pallet sizes.

In 2023, we onboarded Polycarbin, one of our newest suppliers. Polycarbin’s waste diversion platform and proprietary analytics software provide organizations with what others cannot: a closed-loop solution designed to address material management needs, the data necessary for meeting long-term sustainability goals, and the green products needed to move science forward.

We have an established scorecard with EcoVadis and are reporting metrics, including GHG emissions. In alignment with EcoVadis, we focus on driving and implementing improvements throughout our organization within the four themes of Environment, Labor & Human Rights, Ethics, and Sustainable Procurement. We received a Bronze Sustainability Rating for the last two years and improved our score from 56 in 2023 to 64 in 2024.

In early 2024, we moved to our new headquarters in Marlton, NJ. We procured and installed energy-efficient LED lights throughout the office and warehouse. The lights in the warehouse have an auto-off timer feature when employees are not occupying those spaces. We have also installed a new energy-efficient air conditioning system in our warehouse.

Additionally, we are participating in Energy Solutions’ efficient rebate program to offer point-of-sale discounts on purchases of eligible cold-storage equipment.

We also provide an ISO compliant data tracking platform that is backed by a 3rd party LCA.

Thomas Scientific’s own efforts, combined with partnerships with TerraCycle, DuPont Protective Apparel, Corning, and Kimberly Clark, offer several recycling options that are designed and customized to enhance your corporate sustainability program.

We have reduced use of paper at Westnet, we have cycle cardboard, plastics, and other products, and we have installed water fountains to cut down on plastic bottles.
