Green Team Program

University sustainability is a collaborative effort that relies on allies and advocates to cultivate a culture of sustainability. The Green Team Network connects those allies and advocates, empowering them with resources and connections to make incremental sustainable changes that add up to significant ones.

What is the Green Team Network?

The Green Team Network is comprised of staff, faculty, and graduate students who are passionate about making JHU a more sustainable community. They are connected by a listserv, where they discuss events, news, questions, solutions, and ideas.

What do members do?

The Office of Sustainability offers monthly Eco-Smart Challenges, which challenges members to make an incremental change for a more sustainable work or home life (for example, bring reusable utensils when you go out to eat). Green Team members are invited to bi-monthly opportunities, Eco-Smart Outings, such as sustainability infrastructure tours (green roof, power plant), volunteer activites, and happy hours, which offer valuable personal and professional experiences.

Some Green Team members in specific departments or buildings meet monthly to collaboratively strategize for sustainable action in their offices. Members utilize the Green Team Toolkit resources to make sustainability promotion in their offices easier with some go-to fliers created by the Office of Sustainability. Staff across JHU get their offices Green Office Certified, where they identifying opportunities for resource conservation within the department and the building.

Involvement is entirely what individuals make of it. Often, the strongest advocates are the ones who are simply in the loop, even when they are limited in the actions they can take. This network offers the opportunity to stay in the loop, along with our monthly eNewsletter, and empowers individuals to be more #HopkinsEcoSmart.

How can I get involved?

Join the listserv. Teams that meet regularly outside the Eco-Smart Outings include Carey Business School and Eastern. Reach out to greenteams@jhu.edu for further information about these meetings.

Ideas in Action

Think before you print.

Office paper is highly recyclable, but a lot gets wasted. Waste reduction is more cost-effective than recycling because it reduces the amount of material that needs to be collected, transported and processed.
